Today In Music History: 04/08/2016

Today happens to be National Empanada Day. I love me some empanadas. I also love me some music trivia so let’s get to it.

1) It was April 8th 1963 when John and Cynthia Lennon welcomed the arrival of a son they named Julian, after John’s late mother, Julia. That makes Julian 53 today.

2) In Studio A in Detroit, the Supremes recorded “Where Did Our Love Go,” which became their first #1 single, and the first of their five consecutive chart-topping singles. The songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland had originally composed the song for the Marvelettes, but they rejected the song thinking it was childish.

3) On this day in 1969 Neil Diamond became the first performer to sell out the Los Angeles Forum for nine consecutive nights.

4) An album was released on this day in 1975 that changed me forever. It’s still my favorite Aerosmith album ever(I still have the vinyl copy) “Toys In The Attic.”

5) In 1989 after 33 years on ABC, the legendary TV dance show “American Bandstand” moved to cable’s USA Network, with David Hirsch replacing Dick Clark as host. The show was cancelled six months later. Let’s go back to 1982 and enjoy The Go Go’s performing on AB.

6) The death of Kurt Cobain was actually on April 5th, according to the coroner, but it was today in 1994 that an electrician working at Kurt Cobain’s house in Seattle discovered the Nirvana singer’s body on the floor of the greenhouse.

7) Voting was finished for the poll in Classic Rock magazine’s Best Live Acts of All Time. Led Zeppelin topped the list, The Who came in second in the voting and AC/DC was third. It came out on this day in 2008.
