‘One Day At A Time’ Reboot Comes To Netflix

By Brad Haynes

There have been plenty of attempts at resurrecting classic sitcoms, but according to many critics, it’s never been done quite as successfully as the reboot of Norman Lear’s One Day at at Time, which begins streaming on Netflix on Friday, January 6.

Netflix describes the new show as: “A reimagining of the Norman Lear classic, centering on a Cuban-American family. Our heroine is a recently separated, former military mom (Justina Machado) navigating a new single life while raising her radical teenaged daughter and socially adept tween son, with the “help” of her old school Cuban-born mom (Rita Moreno) and a friends- without-benefits building manager named Schneider.”

The Hollywood Reporter says, “Anchored by a tremendous ensemble and a forceful creative team and led by executive producer Norman Lear and showrunners Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce, Netflix’s One Day at a Time is timely, soulful, consistently funny and, more than anything, blessed with great warmth.”

Vulture raves, saying, “Even though it airs on a streaming service, Netflix’s reimagining of Norman Lear’s One Day at a Time is close to a perfect example of old-school, all-things-to-all-people broadcasting: smart but not hifalutin, blunt but not crass, politically and culturally aware (often self-aware) but never academic or theoretical, and proudly old-fashioned in its methods.”

And The New York Times is also in love with the show, saying, “The new “One Day at a Time,” arriving on Friday, is lively and full of voice, a rare reboot that’s better than the original. It’s a throwback in the best sense, to an era of mainstream, socially engaged kitchen-sink sitcoms.”

All 13 episodes of the show’s first season will be available to binge when the show debuts tomorrow.
