On this day in 1968, Elvis Presley, recorded  “A Little Less Conversation.”

Country music singer Mickey Gilley opened Gilley’s, his Pasadena, Texas nightclub on this day in 1971. It was the central location in the movie “Urban Cowboy.”

On this day in 1976, Elton John became the first rock star since the Beatles, to be immortalized with a lookalike figure at Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum.

Rolling Stone magazine readers voted George Michael best male singer and sexiest male artist on this day in 1991.

And finally on this day in 2001, The Recording Industry of America announced that Judy Garland’s “Over The Rainbow” had been selected as their “song of the century.” Rounding out their Top five were (#2) “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby, (#3) “This Land Is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie, (#4) “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, and at (#5) “American Pie” by Don McLean.
