Barry Manilow Comes Out At 73

Barry Manilow has been a successful singer, songwriter and performer in the music industry for well over fifty years.

He’s been interviewed countless numbers of times and has been asked on camera (and off) about his sexuality. It’s an issue he’s sidestepped his entire career. Staying out of the “scandal” limelight has been a mainstay for the veteran, award-winning world class entertainer.

But it seems that suddenly the door to his proverbial closet has not only opened, but it’s been kicked down.

Manilow had kept it a secret because many say he felt he would disappoint many of his die-hard female fans. Times are a changin’ though.

He has admitted to having had an almost four decade relationship with his manager, Garry Kief, and that he actually married him in 2014 at a ceremony at their Palm Springs, California home.

Though a handful of his closest friends and associates knew of he and Garry’s relationship, outsiders were kept at bay for all these years.

During an interview, Barry told People magazine of his sexuality, “I’m so private. I always have been. I thought I would be disappointing them if they knew I was gay. So I never did anything.”

Ironically, Manilow has, during the course of his career, charted 47 Top 40 songs, including 12 number one records, and 27 in the Top 10. According to Radio & Records Magazine, he is the TOP Adult Contemporary artist of all time! Rolling Stone Magazine named him “…the showman of our generation.”

He’s sold over 80 million records worldwide, won 2 Emmys, a Tony Award, 3 American Music Awards, and 4 GRAMMYs. That is just the “tip of the iceberg.”

All that and yet he felt it necessary to keep his personal relationship(s) close to his vest.

According to the iconic singer of so many multi-platinum smash hit songs such as, Mandy, Can’t Smile Without You, and Copacabana (to name but a few), he felt a tremendous amount of fear, stress, anxiety and a constant pressure on his shoulders for keeping it under wraps.

Now it’s safe to say that the pressure is off. It’s a different world that it was 50 years ago…and well, Looks Like He Made It.
