Orlando Pride Releases Their 2017 Roster – Including 5 Time FIFA World Player Of The Year

By now you may know that I’m the P.A. Announcer for a few Central Florida professional sports teams. Whether the Orlando Solar Bears at the Amway Center or Orlando City, Orlando City B, or Orlando Pride at the new Orlando City Stadium.

Being a part of  a sports franchise is very unique. The Orlando City organization is exciting. Being a part of the group of people who present the games is thrilling. Being in the booth and making a goal call for our teams gets my blood pumping!

I’ve been fortunate to have announced multiple playoff games for Orlando Solar Bears and will do so again next week when we return home for playoff games at the Amway Center beginning on the 20th. I’ve also announced a WNBA All Star Game, and ECHL All Star Game, three Copa America games, a World Cup (U.S.A.) qualifying game, and now in July I will be announcing a Gold Cup game at Tampa Stadium.

So how could it get even more exciting. Orlando Pride has found a way to take it to the next level. They have just signed five time FIFA player of the year, Marta. I’m very much looking forward to announcing her name as part of the starting 11, and even more so as she begins to score goals for The Pride.

Considered by many as the greatest female soccer player in history, she’s already begun to create a buzz in the (sports) streets of Central Florida. Especially, now that the team has announced that she will be wearing the #10 jersey. Ironically Orlando City’s #10 jersey belongs to Kaka. We’re going to be selling a LOT of #10 purple jerseys!

This year, Orlando Pride hopes to break the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) attendance record, which we currently hold by, Filling The Bowl once again. We broke the record last year formerly held by the Houston Dash of 21,114 with our opening day attendance of 23,403. This year we plan to break THAT record as well.  Except this year we are shooting to do it in our NEW stadium as the ladies hit the pitch on their first home game of the season when they take on Washington Spirit on April 22nd. First kick is scheduled for 4pm. We want to see you there to make history – again!

The Pride’s roster just keeps getting more and more impressive. With the addition of Marta, the Pride squad boasts some heavy weights in women’s soccer. [sidebar: the U.S. Women’s National Team is the most successful women’s soccer team in history]

They have tallied 3 Women’s World Cup titles, 4 Olympic women’s gold medals, 7 CONCACAF Gold Cup wins, and 10 Algarve Cups. The ladies squad has medaled in every single World Cup and Olympic tournament in women’s soccer history from 1991 to 2015, before being knocked out in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Olympics, after a penalty shoot-out.

All that being said, this year promises to be exciting with the Pride as they hope to become a post-season team in only their 2nd year in the NWSL.

Here is this year’s roster as it was released today (Monday, April 10, 2017)

Goalkeepers: Ashlyn Harris and Aubrey Bledsoe

Defenders: Ali Krieger, Laura Alleway, Mackenzie Berryhill, Steph Catley, Monica Hickmann Alves, Alanna Kennedy, Cami Levin, Toni Pressley

Midfielders: Kristen Edmonds, Nickolette Driesse, Maddy Evans, Camila Martins Pereira, Dani Weatherholt

Forwards: Marta, Alex Morgan, Christina Burkenroad, Danica Evans, Jamia Fields, Jasmyne Spencer, Chioma Ubogagu

Go Pride! Vamos Orlando!
