The FBI lab reported it could not determine the lyrics to “Louie Louie,” on this day in 1964.

In 1970, Johnny Cash performed at the White House at the invitation of U.S. President Richard Nixon. Nixon asked him to sing “Okie From Muskogee,” apparently confusing him with Merle Haggard. Cash sang “A Boy Named Sue” instead.

On this day in 1971 all four former Beatles had solo singles on the UK chart: Paul McCartney with “Another Day,” Ringo Starr with “It Don’t Come Easy,” John Lennon with “Power To The People,” and George Harrison with “My Sweet Lord.”

Elton John released the single “Rocket Man” on this day in 1972.

We go to this day in 1983, when the bass player of the group Mountain, (Mississippi Queen) Felix Pappalardi, was shot and killed at age 43 by his wife Gail, when they argued over his affair with a younger woman. She said the gun went off by accident and was convicted of criminally negligent homicide. She was later found dead in Mexico in 2014.

On this day in 1991 at the OK Hotel in Seattle, Nirvana gave their first public performance of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Singer Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles, got married on this day in 1993 to Jay Roach. They are still together.

Linda McCartney lost her battle with breast cancer on this day in 1998. She had been married to Paul since 1969. He was at her bedside when she passed.

And finally, it was on this day in 2000, that singer Gloria Gaynor sang “I Will Survive” on an episode of  “Ally McBeal.”
