Burt Reynolds Comes Out Of “Hiding” & Hits The Red Carpet

You certainly know the name of Academy Award nominee Burt Reynolds.

He is of one of Florida’s own; a former student athlete at Florida State University, where he played halfback on a football scholarship.  His aspirations of playing pro football evaporated when he was injured in his first game of his sophomore season and the injury was exasperated when he was involved in a car crash later that year.

So he enrolled in Palm Beach Junior College and was convinced to audition for a production (Outward Bound) written by one of his professors. He was cast in the lead and would win the 1956 Florida State Drama Award. The remainder of his acting path is well documented.

Films like Deliverance, The Longest Yard, Smokey & the Bandit & Boogie Nights (which garnered him an Academy Award nomination) are some of the films we’ve seen and loved.

The 81-year-old icon has not been seen (for the most part) for two years, having made an appearance at the 2015 Comic Con. But the one-time sex symbol recently stepped back into the limelight to promote his new film co-starring Robert De Niro, Chevy Chase and TV’s Modern Family actress Ariel Winter (photo left).

He walked down the red carpet at the Tribeca Film Festival with the help of a cane and his co-stars, eventually taking a seat, where he began joking and posing for the paparazzi. It was obvious that his quadruple bypass surgery and advanced years have left him only partially mobile.

In his new movie, Dog Years, art somewhat imitates life as he plays an aging actor who comes to the realization that his best years are behind him as he mourns the loss of his dog.

Despite the fact that his health is failing and his chronological clock continues to tick, Reynolds has three other films currently in production.

Buford T. Justice couldn’t stop him…and neither has Father Time.
