Today In Music History: 05/11/17

BY DOMINO

It’s time for another great edition of Today in Music History!!

Let’s start on this day in 1964. The Beach Boys released the single “I Get Around” with”Don’t Worry Baby” as the B side. It was their first #1 here in the U.S.A. and their first top 10 in the U. K. thanks in part to Mick Jagger saying how much he like the song on a British T.V. show.

We jump to 1968, when Richard Harris released his version of  “MacArthur Park.” His version was over 7 minutes long and peaked at #2. Donna Summer hit #1 with her disco version that was just under 4 minutes.

On this day in 1970, The Beatles released “The Long and Winding Road.” It was their 20th and last #1 song here in the U.S.

A shirtless David Cassidy was pictured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine on this day in 1972.

In 1974, Steely Dan released their highest charting single……It was “Rikki, Don’t Lose That Number,” which  peaked at #4 that Summer.

We go to this day in 1981, when we lost the man that brought Reggae to the World. The great Bob Marley passed away at the age of 36 from lung cancer and a brain tumor.

It was Bruce night out on this day in 1985. Two nights before his wedding to Julianne Phillips, Bruce Springsteen and some friends were at a pub in Oregon.  Springsteen sang karaoke-style to a number of his own records in the jukebox.

More sad news to report. It was on this day in 2004 that we lost John Whitehead of McFadden & Whitehead. He was shot in an apparent case of mistaken identity, while repairing a car. He was 55 at the time and no suspects were ever arrested.
