It was never something I aspired to do, but, I do remember that when I was a kid that a LOT of my classmates said they wanted to be astronauts.
Well now…even if you don’t have the skill set to do it while you’re alive…you can travel to outer space after you’ve passed on.
A company in San Francisco, Elysium Space, made up of ex-NASA personnel and funeral experts, has partnered with Elon Musk’s Space X for what they are calling “memorial spaceflight.” They’ll be sending portions of dead people’s cremated remains into orbit for the price of $2,490…making you a “space traveler.”
Here’s the procedure. After you place an order, they’ll send you a kit with a tiny engraved box to place a small amount of your loved one’s ashes in. You put the ashes in the container and then send them back to Elysium Space’s headquarters.
They’ll then place the remains of (who knows how many) the “space travelers” onto a Falcon 9 rocket, and jettison them into orbit.
You’ll even be able to track your loved one’s trip via the company’s app for their two year flight. Which will end in a breathtaking light show…and here’s the how and why.
Elysium Space CEO Thomas Civeit told CNBC in an interview that “…for about two years, our memorial spacecraft will respectfully and peacefully orbit the Earth,” he continued, “…eventually, in a last poetic moment, the spacecraft will harmlessly re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere, blazing as a shooting star.”
So the next time you look up into the sky and see a falling star…it may be that…or someone’s last few moments before returning – “ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”
That would truly be, The Final Countdown.
