Today In Music History: 07/12/17

On this day in 1954, 19 year old Elvis Presley, signed a recording contract with Sun Records. He got his picture on Rolling Stone magazine 15 years later.

The Rolling Stones made their live debut, on this day in 1962, at the Marquee Club in London. The guys got about $30 bucks for the gig.

The Beach Boys released the single “California Girls,” on this day in 1965. The song got to #3 on Billboard, but was honored later, being included in the Grammy Hall of Fame and listed at #72 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

On this day in 1969, Zager and Evans started a six week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with “In The Year 2525.” The song went #1 in the U.K. also, making them the only one hit wonders to go #1 on both sides of the pond.

The Hues Corporation recorded “Rock The Boat.” on this day in 1973.

On this day in 1980, The Whispers performed on “American Bandstand.”

On this day in 1989 “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” by Simply Red was the #1 song.
