Today In Music History: 07/27/17

The Tokens recorded “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” on this day in 1961.

On this day in 1968, The Who released “Magic Bus” here in the States.

We jump to 1981, when Stevie Nicks released her debut solo album, “Bella Donna.” The album has sold over 6 million copies in the U.S. alone.

33 years ago today (1984) “Purple Rain” hits theaters. The movies has grossed over $80 million world wide and cost about 7 million to make.  The soundtrack has sold over 15 million copies and is listed at #76 on Rolling Stones 500 greatest albums of all time.

Paul Young hits #1 with “Everytime You Go Away,” on this day in 1985. It’s a cover of a Hall & Oates song and the only Hall & Oates cover ever to make the Top 40.

On this day in 1996 “Wannabe” hits #1 in the UK, making the Spice Girls the first all-female group to top the chart with their debut single.

And finally it was on this day in 2013, that I lost my dear friend and fellow radio guy, David “Kidd” Kraddick. He passed away while hosting his Kidd’s Kids charity golf event at age 53. Every day when he got off the air he would say “keep lookin’ up, cuz that’s where it all is.”
