Today marks the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death, thousands of people showed up last night at Graceland and lit candles. How ’bout one of my fave songs by the King.

It was on this day in 1974, in New York City,  that punk rock pioneers the Ramones played their first concert.

On this day in 1975, Peter Gabriel announced that he was leaving Genesis. The group auditioned more than 400 singers during the next 18 months before deciding that Phil Collins, who had been the drummer for Genesis since 1970, could front the band.

On to the nuptial section of Today in Music History. It was on this day in 1983, that Paul Simon and Carrie Fisher were wed. They divorced in 1985. Simon is now married to Edie Brickell. We get another marriage two years later. On her 27th birthday Madonna marries Sean Penn, they were divorced in 1989.

Here’s one where we get to mix baseball, music and a world record. It happened on this day in 1996. 50,000 Yankee fans all did the “Macarena” and set the world record for largest group dance.
