This post is from my cousin’s friend who works for Palm Beach Fire and Rescue…
“Please out of state folks do not post advice for Floridans to leave now. You could be putting someone in extreme danger. Let people make decisions based on local and state guidance. Everything is planned for specific reasons including who should leave and who will be safer staying. Seriously. I am so sorry to sound mean but this is an extreme situation and we need to stop the irresponsible advice on social media. Pray, send well wishes, memes…but please please do not tell people to flee, get out, evacuate etc. and for sure do not say people who haven’t evacuated are stupid, stubborn, or made a poor choice. You have NO idea what you are talking about… We need to connect people to official guidance right now not opinions.”
I’ve been talking people who are in buildings and locations that are considered at low risk who are being made hysterical by friends and family. Evacuation areas are the people who live near beaches (flood zones) or in frame or manufactured housing.
People who are medically at risk (need oxygen etc) should be aware of and ready to go to a shelter or stay in a home that has a back-up generator.
Asking people to evacuate who are NOT in these categories takes up space in shelters/hotels that others at risk NEED. It also puts them in danger since getting out of the state is currently taking 4-5 hours longer than usual and the closest hotels are in CHATTANOOGA (and that was this MORNING). Not to mention, what if they get stuck ON the road during?
I love our listeners. You always call us to tell us where to get gas, plywood, sandbags; where the traffic issues are and lots of other ephemera (important information that’s timely but shortlived) that’s so important to make each others lives better and easier. Stay safe.
We’ll be here Saturday, Sunday and Monday updating you with all this shared information and Orlando’s Greatest Hits of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. It’s what we do and we love it.
