As is expected during a time of crisis the thugs come out to scam people. The latest: free food stamps from FEMA.

FEMA officials said the only department that does have a food stamp emergency program is the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It’s called Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). The program gives food assistance to low-income households with food loss or damage caused by a natural disaster, however, it has not yet been implemented in Florida.

In the meantime, if you do get a call, email or text from someone claiming to be with FEMA and asking for your personal information delete or hang up.

A FEMA spokesman told the Miami Herald Thursday that the only FEMA phone number people should call in regards to disaster relief is 1-800-621-3362 or go to to file their claim.

Officials did say the Disaster Assistance program will be launched however, things have to get back to normal, supermarkets restocked, transportation running and most power should be restored so those who qualify will be able to go to the store and purchase their food.

Sad that there are heartless individuals who take advantage of others during a time of need. Let’s beat them at their own game by warning others especially those most vulnerible of scams. ~grace
