We heard the rumors but looks like the rumors were true. Taco Bell will be dumping the drive-thrus and instead open new “cantinas!” Aye Caramba!
Reports say that within the next five years Taco Bell plans to open between 300 and 350 “cantina-style” locations without drive-thrus. What no drive-thrus? Are you kidding me?
WineAndFood.com reports the new locations — which will be located mostly in Urban areas — will serve beer, wine, sangria, and Twisted Freezes (slushies with tequila, rum, or vodka). Wait, no margaritas? Excuse me, you can’t serve Mexican food (or pretend mexican food) without margaritas! Oh, I bet it’ll be one of those slushie drinks. Ew. Anyway, I digress.
So the new Taco Bell Cantina’s sound like they’ll be pretty upscale and artsy with artwork, open kitchens, and digital menu boards. The new locations will be mostly in Detroit, Pittsburgh, Nashville and New York with plans to open at least 50 in Manhattan. They already have six TBC’s in Manhattan (well that explains the artsy stuff).
Now, I’m from a border city in Texas and of Mexican descent. My grandpa would frequent the neighborhood cantina and believe me, these were not hoity toity artsy places but I can appreciate what Taco Bell is attempting to do in “evolving” for the millenial generation.
Now while I still enjoy my late-night visit’s to Taco Bell and eating my enchiritos in my carrito I’m willing to try the new cantina especially if they provide entertainment! Arriba Arriba!
