Do you have notifications programmed on your phone? How do you feel when you hear that little PING? I know my first reaction is “Oh man, what now?” Well, if you do too, we are not alone.
A new study suggests that one third of notifications which pop up cause a downturn in our mood.
A Nottingham Trent University research team investigated the effect on mood when participants received thousands of digital alerts over a five-week period.
Of the more than half a million notifications, they found that 32 per cent resulted in negative emotions, triggering users to feel hostile, upset, nervous, afraid or ashamed. Errrrr!
Research found that non-human activity – such as general phone updates and wifi availability – had the worst impact on phone users’ mood. Now the one notification that really gets us in a bad mood? Work-related notifications especially when they arrive in bulk. Well, DUH!
However, on the upside, when we people get messages from friends, particularly several at once, we get a feeling of a sense of belonging! And that makes us happy!
So what have we learned from this study? SHUT OFF YOUR NOTIFICATIONS! Aww. I feel better already. ~grace
