Walt Disney made the announcement of his intention to create the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow on this date back in 1965. And while EPCOT never quite reached the utopian vision that was born in that creative head of his, it certainly has been entertaining and thrilling people from all over the world for decades.
Its purpose was to be a real urban city, that would constantly be developing the latest technologies for residents. Can you imagine if we could actually LIVE there?
Originally designed to stimulate American industry to develop new ideas for urban living, it was planned to be a company town. The “EPCOT philosophy” was part of Walt’s original plan for the acres purchased (now WDW).
After his death in 1966, the property became the Walt Disney World Resort in 1971.

Lots of visitors are still bummed it’s not “domed.” (It was reported and possibly intended but it never happened.)
Imagine it with AC. 😉
