Ricky Nelson was the first rock ‘n’ roll artist to be pictured on the cover of LIFE magazine. That happened on this day in 1958.

On this day in 1964, Ringo Starr entered University College Hospital to have his tonsils removed the next day, which caused him to miss a portion of the Beatles’ tour of Australia. He left the hospital on December 10th.

Keeping with a Beatles theme, we jump to this day in 1972, when the Wings released “Hi, Hi, Hi.” The BBC quickly banned the song for its supposedly suggestive lyrics and because of their assumption that the title phrase, “We’re gonna get hi, hi, hi,” was a drug reference.

On this day in 1985 “Broken Wings” by Mr. Mister was the #1 song.

1992Duran Duran release the single “Ordinary World” on this day in 1992, which was earlier than planned after radio airplay creates a huge demand. The song reaches #3 in the US, their biggest hit there since “Notorious” in 1986.

2005 At age 55, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top gets married for the first time, taking longtime girlfriend Gilligan Stillwater as his bride.

2006 GQ magazine names Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson “Newlyweds of the Year,” but by the time the issue hits newsstands, the couple are divorced.
