We start on this day in 1967, when Otis Redding went into the studio to record “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay.” The song went on to be his biggest hit. Redding never saw it hit #1,  he was killed three days later in a plane crash. The song was actually not finished, the whistling at the end was to have lyrics later.

The #1 song on this day in 1974 was “Kung Fu Fighting” by Carl Douglas.

We jump to this day in 1985, when it was “Broken Wings” by Mr. Mister sitting at the #1 spot here in the U.S, a place they held for two weeks.

“Black Or White” by Michael Jackson hits #1 in America for the first of seven weeks on this day in 1991.  U2 was #1 on the album chart with “Achtung Baby.”

Here’s how the group Straight No Chaser got their start. It was on this day in 1998, that he Indiana University a cappella group performed their zany rendition of “Twelve Days of Christmas” at the school. In 2006, a video of the performance is uploaded to YouTube and goes viral, earning the group a record deal and world wide acclaim.

On this day in 2008, Classics IV frontman Dennis Yost dies of respiratory failure at age 65. They hailed from Jacksonville and the name of the band came from the Classic drum set that Yost owned.

And it was on this day, just last year, that Greg Lake, who fronted both King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, died aged 69 after a battle with cancer. Lake was considered one of the fathers of progressive rock, and here’s a little known fact. Jimi Hendrix almost joined Emerson, Lake and Palmer. If that would’ve happened, ELP would’ve turned into HELP. Since we are getting close to Christmas time, how ’bout Mr. Lakes Holiday tune called “I Believe in Father Christmas.”
