We have a lot of would be birthdays today. Sammy Davis Jr would’ve been 92, Jim Morrison from The Doors would’ve been 74, Gregg Allman would’ve been 70 and Dan Hartman would’ve been 66.

On this day in 1961, the first Beach Boys recording was released. It was a song called “Surfin'” and became a local hit. The song was written by Brian Wilson and his cousin Mike Love and recorded with Brian’s brothers, Carl and Dennis and their friend Alan Jardine. Carl played acoustic guitar, Al played double bass and Brian kept time on a garbage can.

On this day in 1979, the song “Babe” by Styx hits #1. It is the only Styx song to ever reach that milestone. Dennis DeYoung wrote it for his wife Suzanne, who he married in 1970 and is still with today.

Annie Leibovitz photographs John Lennon and Yoko Ono at their apartment in New York City for a feature in Rolling Stone, on this day in 1980.  Lennon is shot and killed hours later outside of his New York apartment building. I was watching Monday Night Football with my dad that night when we heard the news.

On this day in 1984, Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol after being involved in a car accident that killed his passenger, Hanoi Rocks’ drummer Nick “Razzle” Dingley, and seriously injured two people in the other vehicle. In 1986, he was sentenced to a 30-day jail term, five years probation and $2.6 million in restitution. He was released from jail after 20 days.

Let’s stay with 1984 as Hall & Oates hit No.1 for the 6th and final time with the song”Out Of Touch.”

On this day in 1986 “The Way It Is” by Bruce Hornsby & The Range was the #1 song.

2000…Sting received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on this day in 2000.

And it was just last year that Mick Jagger became a father for the eighth time, as the 73-year-old and his 29-year-old girlfriend, ballerina Melanie Hamrick, welcomed the arrival of their first child together, a boy they named Devereaux Octavian Basil Jagger. Mick is also a great-grandfather.
