On this day in 1961, Sam Cooke hits the studio to record the song Twistin’ the Night Away. Three years later to the day they were having his funeral. Cooke had been shot by a hotel manager that said she feared for her life. It was ruled a justifiable Homicide.

It’s first showing happened on this day in 1966. The animated holiday special, Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” featuring the narration of Boris Karloff and the singing of Thurl Ravenscroft, who was uncredited when the cartoon was released.

On this day in 1971, Joe Tex released his biggest song “I Gotcha.” It peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 and was used in the movie Reservoir Dogs.

On this day in 1981, approximately 35 million people in 23 countries watched a Rod Stewart concert televised via satellite. Tina Turner was a special guest vocalist with Rod on “Hot Legs.”

It was on this day in 1982, that Daryl Hall & John Oates surpassed the Everly Brothers as the most successful recording duo of all time. Their song “Maneater” was riding it’s first of four weeks in the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

“General Hospital” stars Kristina Malandro and Jack Wagner married on this day in 1993. They divorced in 2006 and Wagner moved on to Heather Locklear. They got engaged, but never married. 

We finish off Today in Music History with some birthdays. Cakes and candles to Christina Aguilera, Elliot Easton from the Cars, rapper and actor DMX, and the well preserved Keith Richards, who turns 74 today.
