Heather Menzies-Urich, who will be remembered always for her role of Louisa Von Trapp in the musical classic The Sound of Music, died Sunday night in Frankford, Ontario. According to her son Ryan Urich, she had recently been diagnosed with cancer. She was 68.
She was married to actor Robert Urich, best known for his turn as Dan Tanna on the TV series Vega$. Urich died of cancer in 2002.
According to Variety, her son said in a statement, “She was an actress, a ballerina and loved living her life to the fullest. She was not in any pain but, nearly four weeks after her diagnosis of terminal brain cancer, she had enough and took her last breath on this earth at 7:22 pm.”
Her Sound of Music co-star Kym Karath, who played Gretl, tweeted that she was “filled with infinite sadness.”
Nicholas Hammond, who played Sound of Music brother Friedrich Von Trapp and later was TV’s Spider-man, tweeted on Christmas day, “We loved our dear sister Heather very much.”
Menzies-Urich was preceded in death by cast member Charmian Carr who played Liesl. She died last year at the age of 72.
