I’ve never been a gym person but the few times I did go I always wondered why I saw way more people just standing around watching the news instead of working out. Well now, one fitness chain is banning the news thing all together because they say its just not healthy for you! Boy, wait until the cable news reports this story!
The Life Time Fitness chain, which has 128 locations, just announced they are banning 24-hour cable news networks from TVs in all of their gyms due to their “consistently negative or politically charged content” because it doesn’t match the company’s “healthy way of life philosophy.” There is some truth to this. Nothing gets my blood boiling faster than hearing the news and it only gives one side of the story or the “reporter” gives his spin on the story. Errrr!
According to a statement on their Twitter feed, “The decision to remove the national cable network news stations resulted from significant member feedback received over time and our commitment to provide family oriented environments free of consistently negative or politically charged content.” So from now on the chain won’t be airing CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and CNBC and instead will stick to channels like USA, A&E, Discovery, HGTV, ESPN and local stations. Uh oh, they might want to rethink ESPN.
And while many people were in favor of the chain’s decision, some expressed disappointment. Others called it censorship. As one club member noted, “I often time my workout to a particular news program I enjoy to serve as an extra motivation for exercising.” Check out some of the other responses below.
I’m not sure how I feel about this. On one hand I agree with Life Time Fitness; on the other hand I agree, it’s not up to them to dictate what I want to watch; on my third hand, it is their business; on my fourth hand I am a paying customer. Whew! I give up, plus I ran out of hands. No problem for me. I don’t do gyms so I’ll just keep watching the news from my couch! ~grace
