Just reading the headline of the California teacher referring to America’s military as “the lowest of our low” made my blood begin to boil. Once I read what exactly happened, I was past boiling blood; my head felt like it exploded!
The teacher, Gregory Salcido, is also a city council member at Pico Rivera, CA. The student who recorded councilman Salcido said it was a Marine Corps t-shirt he was wearing that set the teacher’s rant off. The student made it clear it was a family tradition to be in the Marines and he intended to follow. Salcido responded, “So if it was a family tradition to beat women, would you continue it too? …You better not freaking go…Don’t wear that in here.” Wow. Did this ignorant ungrateful “teacher” and city leader just compare our Marines to men who beat women?
Salcido continued with his offensive rant regarding our military and how he viewed those who kept our great country safe and free. “We’ve got a bunch of dumbsh—s over there,” Councilman Gregory Salcido, a teacher at El Rancho High School, said in one recording. “Think about the people who you know who are over there — your freaking stupid Uncle Louie or whatever — they’re dumbs—ts. They’re not like high-level thinkers, they’re not academic people, they’re not intellectual people; they’re the freaking lowest of our low.”
Please don’t punch your screen because I know I wanted to especially when you hear this “teacher” in his own voice insult the brave men and women.
To add to the injury, Salcido has been in trouble before in 2012 for slapping a student and in 2010 insulting another students race. He was placed on administrative leave (probably with pay knowing California) after calling both incidents “exaggerated.”
The Pico Rivera School Board said they are investigating the report and are “not taking it lightly.” No word from Pico Rivera Mayor on Salcido.
I understand that people make mistakes and misspeak, many quickly apologize. This arrogant man is not apologizing in fact his FB page is defending his remarks under “freedom of speech.”
He’s correct. He is entitled to his opinion although I’m not sure it belongs in the school environment. If I was a parent in the Pico Rivera school district I would make my opinion known too and demand that this man be removed from “teaching” because he has 1) slapped a student, 2) demeaned a student’s race and now 3) has insulted and embarrased a students pride in his family tradition of being proud Marines.
This Salcido sounds like a bully who should not be in any type of leadership. It’s persons like him that are the problem with our society.
