I’m not a baseball fan but some logos are so famous you just recognize them immediately, such as The Cleveland Indians “Chief Wahoo.” Well, adios Chief. The well known mascot is now being retired.
The Indians management have decided to ditch the Chief Wahoo logo ahead of the 2019 season.
The controversial smiling Indian logo has sparked fiery debate from those for and against it being used. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has been a vocal critic of the logo. He cited the need for “diversity and inclusion” in the statement announcing logo would no longer be seen on the field.
The Chief Wahoo logo has been on the Indian’s uniforms since 1948. The Wahoo mascot has even resulted in lawsuits from Native American groups who consider it racist. Other American teams have also faced pressure to change their mascots, including the Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins and the Chicago Blackhawks.
Has the PC world begun to make some in roads that now our beloved mascots are now becoming obsolete? Is that a good thing? Bad thing? I don’t know.
We grew up watching what many would now see as racist or insulting cartoons like Speedy Gonzalez from Looney Tunes. As a Hispanic, of Mexican descent, I should be offended but I’m not. In fact, I love Speedy because he always got one over on the cat, his arch enemy. How can you not love that?
