When I was briefly between full time radio gigs here in Florida trying to get unemployment was like getting an act from congress. It was so difficult I just gave up. Well, today there’s a story out of Michigan, you don’t even have to sign up for unemployment; heck you don’t even have to be human!
In a mix-up at the Michigan unemployment office, a dog was approved for unemployment benefits. You read that correctly, a dog!
Attorney Michael Haddock said he received a notice from the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency in the mail that said “Michael Ryder” will receive $360 a week. But there is nobody named “Michael Ryder” at Haddock’s address. “Ryder,” however, is the name of Haddock’s German Shepherd and Michael is his first name. Okay, I can see how this happened.
So Haddock assumed the notice was for his dog. “Not sure what he is going to do with the money, but it should be interesting,” Haddock said. “I knew he was clever, but he surprised me this time.” Unfortunately for Ryder, he won’t get a chance to cash those checks after the UIA got word of the mix-up.
“I know first-hand it is rare for ‘man’s best friend’ to contribute financially to the household and that will continue in this instance,” said Tim Kolar, the state administrator of investigations at the UIA. Too funny but I can see this happening a lot, maybe not unemployment but other offers.
My female German Shepherd, IO, received an invitation to audition for a modeling school for young girls. True story. The letter was addressed to me but it was about getting my “daughter” IO involved in a modeling school. I couldn’t stop laughing. I should have shown up with her. I mean, she is beautiful and she does take great photos, in fact, that is our running joke at home, IO’s just pretty. Correction, my furry daughter is BEAUTIFUL!
So Mr. Michael Ryder aka Ryder the German Shepherd, you’re not alone in getting offers in the mail. Wonder if I can get IO unemployment benefits? After all, she hasn’t had a modeling gig in quite awhile, or ever. ~grace
