On this day in 1965, the Beatles record “Ticket To Ride.” This was the first song by the band in which Paul McCartney was featured on lead guitar. Even though the group has made conflicting statements on the inspiration of the song, ticket to ride is believed to be a card carried by Hamburg prostitutes in the 60’s declaring their clean bill of health.
You can mark this day in 1967 as the birth of the band Chicago. A rock ensemble called The Big Thing, featuring many members that would make up Chicago, held there first rehearsal in Walter Parazaider’s basement. Along with Walter, Terry Kath, James Pankow and Robert Lamm were part of the band. The audio isn’t that good, but here’s an early recording of the band that would become Chicago.
Gino Vannelli becomes the first white artist to appear on Soul Train, it happened on this day in 1975, and he sang “People Gotta Move.”
On this day in 1977, Glen Matlock was fired as bass player from the Sex Pistols, and was replaced by Sid Vicious. Matlock rejoined in the 90’s when the Pistol’s reformed.
