On this day in 1968, at 6:01 p.m., local time, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. After emergency chest surgery, King was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital at 7:05 p.m. He was 39 years old. Many songs have been written abou the event including "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" by U2.

A taped Elvis Presley concert entitled Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii is telecast on NBC, on this day in 1973. The total worldwide audience for the show, broadcast on satellite, amounts to over a billion people, making it one of the most watched programs ever.

On this day in 1987, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," by Starship hits #1. The song was featured in the movie Mannequin and was a big success in the UK where the song was the 2nd biggest seller of the year. At the time Grace Slick was 47 and became the oldest female to hold the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot100. Cher broke that record later.

We jump to this day in 1996, when a small portion of Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia's ashes were scattered in the Ganges River in India by Garcia's widow, Deborah, and Dead guitarist Bob Weir.
 
 
Pink released her debut album, "Can't Take Me Home." on this day in 2000. It would produce three hit singles and get to double platinum status here in the US.
 
 
And finally, it was on this day in 2008, that Beyonce Knowles married Jay-Z at his New York apartment. Coldplayfrontman Chris Martin and wife Gwyneth Paltrow were in attendance along with Beyonces former bandmates in Destiny's Child, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. The couples net worth is estimated at more than $1 billion.
