On this day in 1968, the lesser known Reginald Dwight, legally changes his name to Elton Hercules John. His name is a contraction of two band mates...Elton Dean and Long John Baldry.

George Harrison releases "Give Me Love," on this day in 1973. That song would replace "My Love" by Paul McCartney at the top of the BillboardHot 100 chart, and in turn was replaced at #1 by "Will It Go Round in Circles" by Billy Preston, who played with Harrison and McCartney during the "Let It Be" sessions in 1969.

On this day in 1977, checking in at 6:08, your #1 song was "Hotel California." The song would pick up a Grammy Award for The Eagles for record of the year in 1978.

On this day in 1994, Randy Bachman led 1,322 guitarists, who had gathered in Vancouver to play Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Takin' Care of Business," for 68 minutes and 40 seconds. The song is by far the best known piece of music from BTO, but only peaked at #12 on the chart.

And it was on this day in 1998, that we lost the great Eddie Rabbitt. He had countless #1's on the Country chart and even managed a #1 on the pop chart with "I Love A Rainy Night." He also wrote one of my favortie Elvis songs "Kentucky Rain." He was 56 when he died of lung cancer.
