On this day in 1971, The Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?" hits #1 for the first of four weeks. It would be the 1st of nine #1's for the group here in the US.

On this day in 1974, it was J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf marrying movie star Faye Dunaway in a Beverly Hills courtroom. The couple divorced in 1979.

It was Elton John's first #1 in the UK, and hit #1 here in the US, on this day in 1976. It was his duet with Kiki Dee "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." It would stay in the top spot for four weeks and sell over 1 million copies.

Paul Simon gives a free concert in Central Park, on this day in 1991, much like he did 10 years earlier with Art Garfunkel. The performance was recorded and eventually became the album Paul Simon's Concert In The Park.

Speaking of concerts in the park, it was on this day in 1997, that Garth Brooks would play to the largest crowd ever in Central Park. An estimated 1 million people attended the live concert with an additional 14.6 million viewing live on HBO.
