On this day in 1965, The Paul McCartney song "Yesterday" is released here in the US. Only Paul was featured on the song, so it was essentially the first solo performance of the band.

The TV series Solid Gold premieres on this day in 1980, featuring Dionne Warwick as the host and the "Solid Gold dancers." The show runs almost eight seasons before discontinuing in 1988.

On this day in 1986, Berlin hit No.1 with the love theme from Top Gun, "Take My Breath Away." It would also win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Let's go to 1991, when Geffen Records throws a party to launch Nirvana's new song "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The band ended up being thrown out of their own party after starting a food fight.

After being shot 6 days earlier in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, it was on this day in 1996, that Tupac Shakur died at age 25.

And it was just three years ago today that we lost the guitar player for REO Speedwagon, Gary Richrath . He recorded 12 albums with the band before leaving in 1989, he was 65 when he died.
