If you've been following the news lately out of Virginia, you'll know that the topic of "blackface" is all over the news, saying that, here is another story but this time it affects a famous fashion brand Gucci. Their new sweater has come under fire for what some say mimics blackface.

The black balaclava sweater from Gucci’s 2018 “Fall Winter” collection is a knit top with a neck that can be pulled up to a person’s mouth, where there’s a large opening with big red lips on it. The description claims it was “inspired by vintage ski masks,” but folks aren't buying it.

The $900 “knit top” features a large mouth cover with big red lips on it.

Folks on social media are up in arms over the $900 sweater which has been dubbed by some as “Haute Couture Blackface for Millennials.” “Balaclava knit top by Gucci. Happy Black History Month y’all,” tweeted one person, while another added, “Ah yes, black face but make it fashion.”

The backlash got so big that Gucci actually pulled the sweater from their website, and released a statement saying the company “deeply apologizes for the offense caused” by the sweater and that it's been pulled from their website and stores. They add,  “We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make. We are fully committed to increasing diversity throughout our organization and turning this incident into a powerful learning moment for the Gucci team and beyond."

Whether you see this sweater as an offensive blackface or not, one thing is for sure, this sweater could be black, blue, red, orange it is not attractive in the least or even appears to be comfortable. What I find even more offensive is Gucci was charging $900 for this stupid sweater. Who buys this crap? ~grace
