Items To Donate To Food Banks During The Holidays

Here's a list of items to help you when you donate food to charities.

I believe strongly in giving back to the community. There is a wonderful feeling that comes over you when you help others and think of those who may not be so fortunate. It's important to give year round but during the holidays the generosity comes out in droves and that's good.

While many people are getting ready for delicious meals for Thanksgiving and looking towards the same for Christmas, others won’t have that luxury. During the season of giving, food banks more than welcome your donations, as they are running low this year. You can even have a food drive during your holiday parties!

Here are some things to know before donating to the local food bank.

  • Don’t donate anything with glass or cellophane packaging, or anything that has been broken or otherwise tampered with, or doesn't have a label.
  • Canned foods are welcome. Watch those expiration dates.

As for what to donate:

  • Cash is always welcome.
  • Canned fish and meat.
  • Peanut butter.
  • Spices.
  • Unsalted nuts and dried fruits.
  • Instant holiday meals.
  • Shelf-stable milk.
  • Whole grain pasta.
  • Canned or dried beans.

And if you are unable to donate this year, more often than not, many of these charities need actual help. One can always find a way to give. As mom used to say, "When there's a will, there's a way." Right again mom! ~grace
