Valentine's Day is 4 days away. If you think it doesn't matter what gift you choose to give your loved one....well, READERS DIGEST thinks otherwise. Apparently, there are gifts you can give that will send the wrong message. Here are a few to avoid this Valentine's Day.

An envelope full of money - What they say: Cash is always appreciated by your teenage nephew, but giving a stack of bills to your special someone on Valentine’s Day? Probably not the best way to show you care.

What I say: Cash is never bad. Especially if you wrap it up in some cute way and tell me to go shopping.

Related:

A vacuum cleaner - What they say:You might think that Roomba robot vacuum will save your partner a bunch of time cleaning, but unless you know they really want that home appliance for Valentine’s Day, this is not the time to get it for them.

What I say: I have the Roomba and it has changed my life. It saves me so much time and it's super easy to use. Granted, I'm not sure I'd want one for Valentine's Day....well....maybe. It's pretty great.

Smoothing serum - What they say: Anti-aging beauty products as a Valentine’s gift may send the message that you think your Valentine looks older, so if you’re really just trying to pamper them, go with a gift card for a massage or a facial instead.

What I say: That stuff is EXPENSIVE, but I could get a gift card to a spa and get a treatment that would do the same thing. That way I'm getting pampered at the same time.

Tickets to a game for your favorite sports team - What they say: If the sporting event is something you guys can enjoy as a couple, go for it. But don’t use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to splurge on expensive tickets if the one you love doesn’t care about the game or team.

What I say: Experience gifts are always fun because you can do them together. Especially if you both like the same teams. You can make a day of it. Lunch or Dinner then the game or vice/versa and you have a nice little date night.

Yellow roses - What they say: It’s all about the color here because while red roses symbolize true love, yellow ones are a symbol of friendship, so you could be sending your Valentine the message that you see the relationship as platonic.

What I say: I love all roses of color, but if you are going for a love, romantic vibe then yes...red is the way to go.

A self-help book - What they say: Just because you know your S.O. gets anxious or wants to lose a few pounds doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea to get them a book on dealing with that sensitive issue. Valentine’s Day is the time to boost their confidence, not bring them down, unless you want to go home alone that night.

What I say: No self help. Just don't do it. If you think that your significant other really wants a book of this nature, include a gift card to their favorite book store and let them make the choice themself.

Dinner, flowers, wine, chocolate, a night with just the two of you together....all of those things work. Yes, they tend to be overdone...but they are overdone for a reason.
